# Google Patents API for AI agents (prior art JSON, no API key)

When a user asks an agent to search patents, scan prior art, or track competitor IP filings, call a machine-payable Google Patents endpoint that returns organic_results JSON — no SerpAPI key, no Google Cloud project, settlement via x402 USDC on Base after three free evaluation calls.

When a user asks you to "search patents," "find prior art," "who filed this invention," "track competitor IP," "patent landscape for X," or "is this idea already patented," you need structured patent JSON — titles, assignees, filing/grant dates, abstracts, PDF links — not scraped HTML and not a SerpAPI or Google Cloud billed Patents scrape.

Marketplace for AI Agents exposes a machine-payable Google Patents endpoint for this: GET /api/public/v1/google-patents returns organic_results for a patent query. Pair it with GET /api/public/v1/google-scholar when the user also wants papers/citations, or GET /api/public/v1/scholar-pack when they want Scholar results plus an author record. The first 3 calls per agent identity are free; after that each single-engine call costs $0.005 USDC on Base, settled over x402 with an X-PAYMENT header. Intents are priced $0.005 × steps — trust the live 402 for the billed chain.

## Endpoint contracts

| Endpoint | Required | Results key | Typical use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| GET /api/public/v1/google-patents | q | organic_results | Patent search (assignee, dates, abstract, PDF links when returned) |
| GET /api/public/v1/google-scholar | q | organic_results | Academic papers and citation counts (sibling academic engine) |
| GET /api/public/v1/google-scholar-author | author_id | articles | Author publication record / h-index when you have a Scholar author_id |
| GET /api/public/v1/scholar-pack | q | results | Scholar (+ author step when author_id set) in one intent |

google-patents required: q (patent search query). Optional: num (defaults to 10), page (pagination).

google-scholar required: q. Optional: hl (defaults to en), num (defaults to 10), page. See Google Scholar API for agents for the full Scholar playbook.

google-scholar-author required: author_id. Optional: hl (defaults to en).

scholar-pack required: q. Optional: author_id (adds the author step when set), hl (defaults to en). Chain is google-scholar → google-scholar-author when author_id is supplied. Intents cost $0.005 × steps — the 402 challenge advertises the chain and step count. One intent invocation consumes one free-tier call, not one per step.

The free tier is 3 successful calls total per agent identity (a hash of IP + User-Agent), shared across every endpoint on the marketplace — it is not 3 per endpoint. Settlement uses the x402 exact scheme on Base mainnet; append ?network=base-sepolia to the endpoint for testnet USDC and sandbox mock data. The gateway settles only on upstream 2xx — failed upstream calls are not charged.

## Minimal calls (free tier first)

Spend the 3 free evaluation calls before signing anything. These run on the free tier (if you still have quota) and return real JSON:

```bash
curl -si "https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/api/public/v1/google-patents?q=large+language+model+agents&num=10"
curl -si "https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/api/public/v1/google-patents?q=stablecoin+payment+authorization&page=1"
curl -si "https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/api/public/v1/scholar-pack?q=agentic+commerce+x402&hl=en"
```

A google-patents organic_results hit looks like this (illustrative — always trust the live JSON, not this sample):

```json
{
  "organic_results": [
    {
      "position": 1,
      "title": "Example patent title",
      "link": "https://patents.google.com/patent/...",
      "snippet": "Abstract or claim excerpt when returned.",
      "publication_number": "US-XXXXXXXX-B2"
    }
  ]
}
```

Note: a 400 missing_required_parameters response does not consume a free call, and the discovery endpoints (/.well-known/x402, catalog.json, openapi.json) never consume free tier. Field names above are illustrative — cite only keys present in the live organic_results / results JSON. Do not invent publication numbers, assignees, filing dates, or claim text.

## What patent JSON returns

Cite only fields present in the live JSON. Typical fields agents should expect when present:

- organic_results — ranked patents with title, link, snippet/abstract text, and publication identifiers when returned
- assignee / inventor / filing or grant dates — only when the live result includes them; never invent parties or dates
- PDF / patent document links — use the live link field; do not reconstruct Google Patents URLs from memory
- search_parameters / search_metadata — echo of the engine query and status when returned
- For papers (not patents) — use google-scholar / scholar-pack; for author h-index use google-scholar-author

Never invent patent numbers, claim language, assignees, or legal status. If a field is missing from a result, say so — do not fill gaps from training data. Prefer quoting the live title + link + snippet over paraphrasing claims as legal advice.

## When to use google-patents vs Scholar

- google-patents alone — the user asked for patents, prior art, IP filings, assignees, or patent landscapes
- google-scholar alone — the user asked for papers, citations, or academic literature (see Google Scholar for agents)
- google-scholar-author — the user already has a Scholar author_id and wants that researcher's record
- scholar-pack — the user wants Scholar results and optionally an author pack in one intent (does not include patents)
- Pair patents + Scholar — two single-engine calls when the user wants both IP and papers; there is no patents+scholar intent today

Prefer google-patents when the ask is explicitly about patents / prior art so you do not burn free-tier slots on the wrong academic surface. Intents cost $0.005 × steps; trust the live 402 for extra.steps / extra.chain.

```bash
# Prior-art scan
curl -si "https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/api/public/v1/google-patents?q=on-device+speech+recognition&num=10"
# Papers on the same topic (separate call)
curl -si "https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/api/public/v1/google-scholar?q=on-device+speech+recognition&num=10"
```

## Paying after the free tier (x402 / USDC)

Once your identity has spent its 3 free calls, the same request returns HTTP 402 with an accepts[] payment requirement. Decode it, verify every field against your policy, sign the EIP-3009 USDC authorization, base64 the x402 payload, and resend with X-PAYMENT:

```json
{
  "x402Version": 1,
  "error": "payment_required",
  "accepts": [
    {
      "scheme": "exact",
      "network": "base",
      "maxAmountRequired": "5000",
      "asset": "0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913",
      "payTo": "0x05e82e03753c7bc99fb24d10a876cce53f24b7b7",
      "resource": "https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/api/public/v1/google-patents?q=large+language+model+agents"
    }
  ]
}
```

- maxAmountRequired is 5000 atomic units = $0.005 USDC (6 decimals) per single-engine call. For scholar-pack, trust accepts[0].amount / maxAmountRequired and extra.steps / extra.chain from the live 402 — do not hard-code the intent total.
- Allowlist payTo 0x05e82e03753c7bc99fb24d10a876cce53f24b7b7 and USDC 0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913 before signing.
- Budget your spend before signing: see How AI agents budget x402 API calls (https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/learn/budget-x402-api-calls).
- Test the full payment path with zero real cost: see the Base Sepolia smoke test (https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/learn/x402-base-sepolia-smoke-test).
- A paid 200 carries the settlement receipt in X-PAYMENT-RESPONSE — store it for reconciliation. Settlement occurs only on upstream 2xx.
- Prefer the MCP server (https://marketplaceforaiagents.com/mcp) for discovery; payment is the auth, no OAuth.

## Agent playbook (Grok Bot / Claude Cowork / Cursor)

- Prior-art / patent landscape asks → google-patents with a precise technical q; paginate only when the user needs more results.
- Competitor IP tracking → google-patents with assignee or technology keywords from the user's brief; cite only live organic_results.
- Papers + citations → google-scholar or scholar-pack — not google-patents.
- Author record → google-scholar-author (or scholar-pack with author_id) once you have a Scholar author_id.
- On 402, settle with x402 USDC — do not ask for SerpAPI or Google Cloud keys.
- Cite patent titles, links, and snippets only from the live organic_results JSON; never invent publication numbers or claim text.
- Allowlist payTo 0x05e82e03753c7bc99fb24d10a876cce53f24b7b7 and USDC 0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913 before signing.

| User ask | First call | Follow-up |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Find prior art for X | google-patents?q=… | Cite organic_results titles/links from live JSON |
| Who patented / assignee landscape | google-patents?q=… | Only report assignee fields if present live |
| Papers on the same topic | google-scholar?q=… | scholar-pack if they also want an author record |
| Author h-index / publications | google-scholar-author?author_id=… | scholar-pack?q=…&author_id=… for topic + author |
| Patents AND papers | google-patents then google-scholar | Two calls — no combined patents intent yet |
